from Indooroopilly. We pride ourselves in bringing great music and

ANTaR Qld is a people’s movement, committed to the rights of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders to determine their own future. Education and advocacy are central to our work. We organise events, forums, lobbying, petitions and specific campaigns such as the Stolen Wages and the Close the Gap Indigenous Health Campaigns. We seek a part time Office Manager to manage the smooth day-to-day running of our office and provide administrative support for our Management Committee and campaign staff. This includes maintenance of our database and email lists. There are a small number of administrative and campaign volunteers whom the Office Manager will coordinate and support.

This position will suit you if you have good interpersonal skills and excellent office skills. You need to be self-directed and have organisational skills, be able to use your initiative, problem solve and have a commitment to social justice. You also need high levels of integrity and confidentiality and an ability to work in a small team environment.

Salary: SACS Level 4.

Part-time: Two five hour days per week with some additional hours offered for busy times.
Contract end: 17th December 2010

Switch 1197AM, a community radio station based on Edward St in Brisbane, is looking for people to write and eventually present the news and weather in the mornings.

The bulletins are recorded the night before and people would need to contribute by writing two sixty word stories by 9.30pm three times a week.

The station is a dance radio station, similar to Radio Metro on the Gold Coast so the news needs to be targeted at a youth audience.

Contribute Magazine is a United Nations Student Association's (UNSA) publication, focusing on international issues and events.

The next edition - "The Road Ahead" - will be released on the University of Queensland's in Semester 1, 2010.

Contribute aims to create a lively and open forum in which debate on international affairs, foreign policy, human rights, economics, and the environment can flourish. By providing the space for undergraduate and postgraduate students, academics and the odd practitioner, Contribute stimulate discussion and raise the profile of international issues amongst the student community.

2009 has been a year of phenomenal storytelling in film and in theatre, a year of artists telling stories that create change in our world. Consider two films, in particular, that illustrate how the lowest circumstances can give rise to the highest achievements and how we are all lifted when a single person is helped.

You're probably aware of Lee Daniels' Precious: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, which began its journey at the '09 Sundance Film Festival and has now touched audiences around the world. Precious is the unbelievable true story of an impoverished and abused teenage girl who finds hope through an alternative school that changes her life forever. It's a must-see and is in theatres now.

In the documentary realm, Garbage Dreams profiles a Cairo recycling organization that utilizes proceeds from recycling to fund programs benefiting Egyptian youth. Made by first-time Egyptian-American director Mai Iskander, the film received a 2007 Sundance Documentary Fund Production/Post-Production Grant for $30,000. Seeing Garbage Dreams inspired The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to give $1 million to support the work of The Spirit of Youth Association, the organization highlighted in the film.

Consider the power of these stories. These Sundance Institute supported films demonstrate that individual artists can inspire audiences to think -- and act -- differently. GLOBAL CONSCIENCE INITIATIVE CAMEROON – APPEAL FOR JOURNALISM PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS FOR PENPAL PROGRAM

The Global Conscience Initiative is a grassroots NGO working to establish a human rights framework in Cameroon, West Africa. One aspect of GCI is the Media Watch Project, which aims at ironing out human rights abuses in the media, government censorship, and the hegemonic styles of press that restrict truthful reporting.

The Media Watch Project has had many successes in its short lifetime, undertaking interviews with regional journalists, submitting press releases, running a radio program, and collating their data into accessible research to be used as secondary for larger international humanitarian media groups.

I am an Australian working in the Buea office in the Anglophone region of Cameroon. One of the new aims of the project is to establish contact between practicing human rights journalists in Australia and the UK, with those working here in the Anglophone region.

I ask you to forward this email to any journalists who would be interested in this quasi-penpal system. If you are a practicing journalists, or a postgraduate journalism student I ask you to get involved in this initiative.

For those interested, I will forward a guide of expectations and put you in contact with a local English speaking journalist. If you have a specific interest (eg. Development journalism, women’s issues) then I can try to arrange a corresponding local journalist in this area. We then establish an email exchange of articles and stories for editing. This process of constructive criticism will be especially useful for reporting difficult subjects such as torture, rape and corruption.

We hope to be of assistance for the style and practice of journalism in this region, helping to bring a more objective international method to the press. Justice for murdered journalist: The Alliance has written to Federal Attorney-General, Robert McClelland requesting the referral of ABC cameraman Paul Moran’s murder to the AFP for further investigation, with the possible aim of extraditing the man responsible to Australia to face war crimes charges. The mastermind of Moran’s death in a suicide bombing in Iraq in March 2003 is widely recognised as Najmuddin Faraj Ahmad, better known as Mullah Krekar, currently Oslo resident and noted as a key lieutenant of UN-listed terrorist organisation Ansar al-Islam.

The objective of The J.B. Fairfax Award for Rural Journalism is to encourage quality coverage of rural and regional affairs by Australian journalists. The Award has been established through a private donation by Mr. J.B. Fairfax, AO, and is managed by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Foundation (RASF), in collaboration with Rural Press Agricultural Publishing.

As a range of existing awards are already available for professional practitioners of rural journalism, The J.B. Fairfax Award for Rural Journalism deliberately focuses on encouraging undergraduate or postgraduate students of studies relevant to rural affairs to consider a career in rural journalism upon graduation.

One award of $10,000 is offered annually to a student to be used towards the costs of the student’s education.

Applicants for the award must:
* be enrolled in any undergraduate or postgraduate degree of relevance to rural affairs at an approved Australian education provider
* be aged 30 years or under
* submit a feature article of up to 1,200 words, exploring a contemporary issue, trend or activity of interest to rural and regional communities, of publication standard and including a minimum of four sources in the article; and
* demonstrate an active interest in rural affairs and a commitment to pursuing a career in rural journalism upon graduation.

The student whose application is judged as most meritorious will receive an award of $10,000 to be contributed towards the costs of their study. In addition, the student’s article will be published in a major Rural Press publication after the award is announced.

Articles submitted will be judged against the following criteria:
* appropriateness and significance of topic;
* use of quality resources;
* originality;
* clarity;
* accuracy; and
* grammar and writing style.

The selection panel will be comprised of Mr. J.B. Fairfax, AO, a representative of Rural Press Agricultural Publishing and a representative of the Royal Agricultural Society Foundation.

The AFR experienced the biggest fall in year on year sales, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, with a drop of -9.7%, while the Australian took a -4.2% hit over the same period. The Courier-Mail’s Saturday paper, by contrast, enjoyed an increase in sales of 4.9%. In the magazine market, ACP’s Famous showed a 35% increase. This message is to invite you to the QLD screening of award-winning film The End of Poverty (Think Again), which has been called An Inconvenient Truth for global economics.

Narrated by Martin Sheen and featuring Nobel Laureates Joseph Stiglitz and Amartya Sen, The End of Poverty (Think Again) is the first film to succinctly explain how our economic system has created poverty and why it is the foundation for the current financial crisis.

The film debuted with its official selection at the Cannes Film Festival and will be released in the United States in November 2009. It includes interviews with leading authors, economists, activists, politicians, and historians from around the world.

Rupert Murdoch is considering removing news articles from Google's search index as a way to encourage people to pay for content online. "We say they steal our stories.” According to data from Experian Hitwise such a move would be felt by News Corp - Google is the top traffic provider for News Corp.'s WSJ.com, accounting for more than 25 per cent of the site's traffic. The Brisbane Oxfam office is looking for volunteers, especially a videographer/photographer, to help out at the Vaka Pasifica festival in Runcorn/Fruitgrove on Saturday 14 November. This is a Pacific communities’ festival with a focus on global warming in the Pacific, with singing, entertainment and great food.

Oxfam will be distributing information, asking people to sign petitions, showing the Sisters on the Planet DVD, etc.

Time and tasks:

Meet at 9.00 am, leave the Valley Oxfam office by train at 9.25 and arrive in Fruitgrove at 10.10

A film about the deaths of six Australian journalists during and immediately after the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975 has topped this year’s AFI Award nominations with 14 nods, including one for best film. UNYA Australia Youth Representative 2010

The Youth Representative will travel around Australia to speak with young people from all
walks of life, taking their voice to the United Nations in New York. Throughout the process,
the Youth Representative works closely with DFAT and UNYA, and has particular support
from the National Vice-President (Youth Representation).

In the position of Youth Representative, the successful candidate should display the ability to consult widely with young people and effectively discern youth opinion, as well as prioritising youth issues. The other main expectation of the Youth Representative is that the selected person will be able to represent the views of young people at the United Nations General Assembly, and execute a youth agenda within the parameters of the Australian Delegation’s set role.

Applications are open to any Australian citizen aged between 15 and 24 (birth date
must be after 14/11/1985). Applicants must be available to travel throughout Australia to
consult widely with young people from early March 2010 until August 2010 and must also
be available to travel to New York City in September 2010 for up to eight weeks.

Helping hands across the region
The Alliance Safety and Solidarity Appeal is supporting three disaster relief efforts for media workers and their families in Indonesia, the Philippines and Samoa, which have suffered recent natural disasters. Model UN Opportunities: SydMUN and HKMUN

The Sydney University Model United Nations (SydMUN) is held each year in December at the University of Sydney. Founded in 2006, it was the first intervarsity Model UN conference in Australia hosted annually by a single university. Originally focused on delegates from the Sydney metropolitan region, SydMUN has since expanded to embrace participants from across Australia, while keeping a core of NSW delegates. SydMUN is open to all university students.

In the spirit of previous delegations, UQ will once again journey south to Sydney, for the Sydney Model United Nations Conference from the 4th to the 6th of December. This is set to be great opportunity to introduce yourself to the world of MUN, catch up with friends from AMUNC/BrizMUN or just participate in yet another fun filled event.

Global festival celebrates local culture

From Thai to Muslim to local Australian culture, students from The University of Queensland (UQ) will exhibit multiple ethnic traditions during this year’s inaugural Global Village on Wednesday October 7 at the St Lucia campus.

Global Connect (GC) and the United Nations Student Association (UNSA) in association with the UQ Union are organising a day of international food, dance, music and film to showcase the diversity in student culture on campus.

The day’s activities, including fair trade craft sales, a cosplay café, Islamic calligraphy, Latin dance performances and a Parade of Nations fashion show, will help students and the wider community gain a better understanding of what the international arena has to offer.

Various traditional foods will also be served, allowing participants a tantalising taste of other cultures.

The event will also bring in a local context by getting participants to explain what Australia means to them.

As over 6,000 international students are currently enrolled at UQ, Global Village organiser Cheryn Tan said the event “is an opportunity for international student societies not only to partake in their heritage, but also show off their cultures to the wider community at UQ.”

Bougainville community radio station wins 2009 UQ award

A pioneering community radio station in Papua New Guinea’s Autonomous Province of Bougainville, New Dawn FM 95.3, has won the UQ School of Journalism and Communication’s Communication and Social Change Award 2009.

Based in the town of Buka, locally-owned New Dawn FM 95.3 Community Radio was founded to help rebuild Bougainville’s civil society in the wake of a devastating 10-year internal conflict which killed 20,000 people, and displaced 40,000 others.

New Dawn FM receives the CSC Award commemorative plaque and A$2,500.
Reflecting the consistently high-calibre of entries, the CSC Jury also awarded a special Meritorious Commendation Award to Indian graphic designer and artist Ms Lakshmi Murthy for her innovative and ground-breaking use of graphic design to promote communication and social change.

Ms Murthy receives A$1500 and a CSC plaque.

UQ’s prestigious annual Communication and Social Change Award was launched in 2006, to honour outstanding contributions by individuals or organisations around the world to the theory and practice of CSC.

Position Description Community Campaigner

Queensland Conservation (QCC), the peak non-government environment group in Queensland is seeking the services of a Community Campaigner.

The Community Campaigner has responsibility for implementing QCC campaign strategies with a particular focus on broad community engagement.

This position is offered on an initial short term basis (with options to renew).

In the short term it will focus upon organising community activities and events in the lead up to the Copenhagen Climate Talks in December. A central task will be the organising of the annual Brisbane WalkAgainstWarming event.

The community campaigner is expected to have demonstrated experience in organising community events, knowledge of the issues and strong communication skills in media and community relations.

A salary package (includes 9 per cent superannuation) of $12,000 is offered for a 10 week contract (12 October - 18 December 2009).

The House of Representatives has passed a bill this week abolishing conclusive certificates, which gave ministers sweeping powers to keep documents secret. The MEAA believes this is a good first step along the way to open and accountable government but believes further improvements to the FOI Act are still needed. Hungry Beast

Get videos you make broadcast on ABC TV.

Hungry Beast is a new topical TV program that starts on ABC1 at 9pm on Wednesday 30th September, when the Hungry Beast website at: abc.net.au/hungrybeast will also go live.

Hungry Beast (previously known as Project NEXT) is being produced by Zapruder's other films and broadcast on the ABC and on the web.

Hungry Beast is a fresh take on the world with just one instruction: "Tell us something that we don't know".

Each week, we'll produce a half-hour of topical TV, as well as daily web content, bringing viewers news from outside the loop.

And we are looking for YOU to contribute to our website and to the TV program.

We want our stories to be informed by and built on by you, the audience participant, though the instantaneous and occasionally terrifying powerof the Internet. The site will not just recycle clips from the TV program but will feature original yarns during the week, which may or may not end up on the TV show. Synergy! Everybody wins!

In addition to asking people to join our online community to commentate and contribute to our stories, we are also looking for originally produced videos.

We want 1-3 minute video stories on any topic that grabs your attention, makes your blood boil, cracks you up or has been neglected or misreported by the mainstream media. You can present it seriously or take the piss. Record it on a video camera, or on your mobile. Create a photo essay or use clay mation if you have 1000 hours up your sleeve!

Video stories you produce should also aim to satisfy the Hungry Beast guiding principle that they tell us, "the audience", something we didn'talready know.

If you become a member of the Hungry Beast site, the Hungry Beast online community will vote videos stories you contribute on and the most popular videos will have the potential to be broadcast nationally on TV.

If your video is up to standard and is broadcast on TV, you will also get paid for it. Full details of how it all works and guidelines for contributors will be available when the Hungry Beast website goes live on September 30.

You will be able to join the community and upload your stories when the website goes live. In the meantime you have a couple of weeks head start to get out there and start writing,shooting and editing.

Now for the boring bit and don't hit the snooze button, this is important. You must ensure your work does not contain any words, art, music, photographs, sound recording, footage or other material you have not created.

Videos you submit should also have reasonable quality pictures and have decent sound you can hear and understand.

Your videos should also not defame any person, or abuse or vilify people. If they do, or if they contain copyright material that wasn't created by you, the videos won't be cleared for publication on the website and you'll have wasted a lot of time and effort.

There are a few terms and conditions which you will need to agree to before joining the Hungry Beast community, which will be available on the site in a couple of weeks, and for content producers, one of the main ones is the following:

By submitting your Work to the Hungry Beast website you grant to Zapruder's other films and the ABC, and their licensees and assignees a non-exclusive licence to exercise all rights in perpetuity throughout the world in your Work, and in all other materials provided by you to the ABC, including the right to include your Work as part of theProgram, and to commercialise your Work, but only in association with Hungry Beast"

While you have granted and non-exclusive in perpetuity license for your work to Zapruder's other films/ABC by submitting it to Hungry Beast, all content posted to Hungry Beast will remain the intellectual property ofthe author, unless it is purchased by Zapruder's other films and the ABC for broadcast, in which case, it becomes exclusive property of Zapruder's other films/ABC and may be used in perpetuity, globally, for any use, at any time.

In plain English that means you will grant us a non-exclusive right to use videos or other work you submit to Hungry Beast forever, but you will still own it and have the right post it to other sites or, sell it, or do whatever else you like with it, forever. Unless we buy a video from you, in which case we will have exclusive use of that video forever, but you will still be able to keep a copy to show you family and friends.

With the legalese it out of the way, if you're up for it, it's time start coming up with ideas and planning shoots for video stories ASAP as the first season of Hungry Beast will run for 10 weeks and finishes in early December.

Alliance welcomes AFP investigation into Balibo murders
The Alliance and the International Federation of Journalists have welcomed the decision by the Australian Federal Police, to launch an investigation into the deaths of the Balibo Five in October 1975. "Too many journalists are killed while doing their duty to bring us important stories from dangerous places," Chris Warren said. Awards get a make over
As a result of the Government’s recent award modernisation process all journalists working in print and online media will be covered by a modern award. The Journalists Published Media Award and the Broadcasting and Recorded Entertainment Award will underpin collective agreements, just as our existing awards do now. NYT reporter rescued
A New York Times reporter held by the Taliban in Afghanistan was freed this week during a dramatic military operation, in which his Afghan colleague was killed. Gunmen snatched Stephen Farrell and Sultan Munad last Saturday while they were reporting on a controversial American air strike. The IFJ has called on Nato leadership in Afghanistan to investigate the circumstances which led to Sultan's killing and engage with Afghan Association of Journalists on their safety needs. ABC managing director Mark Scott has come to the defence of Britain’s public broadcaster following James Murdoch’s public attack last month. In a first for Australia and the Pacific, The University of Queensland has won the right to host UNESCO's global World Press Freedom Day conference and Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize-giving ceremony in 2010.

Announcing UNESCO's decision to stage the World Press Freedom Day headline event in Brisbane next year, Director-General Koichiro Matsuura said his organisation was "proud to hold this ceremony in your wonderful country, and for the first time in the Pacific region".

The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize honours a person, organisation or institution that has made an outstanding and courageous contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world.

The theme of World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2010 is 'Freedom of Information: The Right to Know', and UQ's conference will focus particularly on freedom of expression issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

QLD winners announced
The Australian’s Michael McKenna has been named Queensland Journalist of the Year for 2009. At the Alliance’s Queensland Media Awards last Saturday McKenna also won Best Print/Online News Report, and shared the Best Sports Report honour with colleague Dan Koch. Late ABC TV chief-of-staff Albert Asbury was honoured posthumously with the Most Outstanding Contribution to Journalism Award. Sedition and anti-terror
The Commonwealth Attorney-General’s department has released a discussion paper on Australia’s regime of anti-terror and sedition laws. After 2001, the Howard government brought in 44 separate anti-terror measures, some of which have important ramifications for freedom of speech and expression in this country. The new discussion paper is the result of wide consultation and attempts to address some of these issues. Tamil journalist jailed
Sri Lankan journalist J.S. Tissainayagam was sentenced this week to 20 years “rigorous imprisonment” under Sri lanka’s draconian anti terror laws. Tissainayagam was arrested in March 2008. More than 150 days later he was charged with terrorism related offences for articles he wrote in the North Eastern Monthly magazine in 2006 and 2007. Call for a new Co-ordinator for the QLD Fair Trade Collective

The current Co-ordinator of the Queensland Fair Trade Collective, Shannon Sheedy, has just been elected as a member of the Executive Committee of FTAANZ (Fair Trade Association of Australian & New Zealand), which is fantastic, but means that we are urgently seeking a new Co-ordinator!

The new Co-ordinator will receive advice and support from Shannon and others in the Collective, so if you have an understanding of and a real passion for Fair Trade, please consider applying!

The Queensland Fair Trade Collective (QFTC) is committed to raising awareness of ethical production and trade justice in Queensland, and as a not-for-profit network, it involves a diverse group of people, from students to development workers to Fair Trade business owners. All involvement in the Collective is Voluntary (apart from point6 below). Each year the group organises a range of awareness and education events (e.g. at festivals and markets), and major events during Fair Trade Fortnight in May, and before Christmas.

The role of a Co-ordinator is as follows:
A general understanding of Fair Trade required
Work with members of the QLD Fair Trade Collective to create events to promote Fair Trade to the wider community.
Work with staff at FTAANZ in achieving their goals for Fair Trade Fortnight (MAY) and for other promotional plans throughout the year.
Delegate and manage Volunteers to ensure events are successful.
Co-ordinate and attend regular QFTC meetings, which are currently held at Paddington
*Travel* Interstate travel (all expenses paid) for two meetings per year for a Co-ordinator and Assistant Co-ordinator to be briefed on the FTAANZ promotional schedule and objectives and to share ideas with other state networks.
This is predominantly a Volunteer position however a stipend will be paid by FTAANZ for co-ordination of Fair Trade Fortnight (amount not yet finalised)
Commitment until Monday 31st May 2010 (and beyond if possible) is essential!

scoop.co.nz is sort of like New Zealand's equivalent of crikey.com.au. Pacific Scoop is moderated and edited by Associate Professor David Robie and colleagues at the Pacific Media Center at the Auckland University of Technology. Sports reporters required for World Masters Games

Infostrada Sports has been contracted by the organisers of the World Masters Games to help with the planning of the Event News Service, and then with the delivery of a staffing solution, training, and operations of the Event News Service during the World Masters Games in Sydney.

Infostrada Sports has developed an expertise in this area. We by no means claim to be the only ones who can do this, but we have worked hard over the last ten years, developing policies and procedures, methods of operating, and training and developing staff in the process. We believe we can add significantly to an organising committee, because we deliver a fully tested and sound operation.

We are responsible for the collection, production and distribution of a wide range of news and information for the accredited media.

We help events and organising committees by feeding information to the media, helping to fill in the gaps from events, sessions and matches where the media may not be able to attend.

At the World Masters Games, the Event News Service will provide diverse reports including previews, reviews, flash quotes, press conference highlights and collated summaries from competition venues to keep the media informed about the progress of the Games.

We will require reporters to attend various sessions of events, write reports, do interviews and provide summaries, and send these to our central sub editing desk for processing.

Event News Service reporters will get to sharpen their basic reporting skills, learn to write breaking news, practice finding story angles under deadline pressure and get hands-on experience at interviewing athletes.

We are looking for interns who will receive training, and then Games-time will receive daily briefings and full support as they gather news items. Training will take the shape of on-line and face-to-face training and will be mandatory for all potential candidates.

For the Games-time roles, all interns will need to have their own laptop and Infostrada Sports will provide expenses for those who can use their own car. All communication costs and meals will be provided. But no travel to Sydney, or accommodation costs can be met, due to the tight budgetary constraints of the project.

Infostrada Sports’ event news service operation will cover all sports, but there is no expectation to have a report from every event. Our reporting teams will be based around a number of ‘hubs’, including the Sydney Olympic Park precinct, the Penrith sports venues; and other venues spread around Sydney.

Reporters will be led by a Chief of Staff, Sub Editors and a team of senior reporters, as well as the Infostrada Sports staff.

It will be an exciting and challenging opportunity for journalists-in-training to test their skills and deliver quality output under pressure.

Reporters will need to be available for the first briefing with the organisers of the World Masters Games scheduled for Wednesday 7 October 2009 at Sydney Olympic Park at 9am till 19 October (the day after the Closing Ceremony).

Rupert Murdoch has again signaled News Corporation’s intent to charge for online content. “Quality journalism is not cheap, and an industry that gives away its content is simply cannibalising its ability to produce good reporting,” a statement also at odds with the wave of journalist redundancies at News Limited (see https://www.nojournos.org.au/map). Terror threat journos arrested
Two journalists have been charged after gaining entry to Holsworthy barracks in Sydney. A reporter and photographer were detained after gaining access to the base, highlighting security concerns the day after news broke of a terror threat to the barracks. It has been reported that the base's private security guards let the journalists drive in. They are due to appear in Liverpool Local Court on September 25. Read more http://tinyurl.com/klova3

Korea frees US journalists
US TV journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee were freed from a North Korean labour camp this week as a result of “humanitarian mission” by former US president Bill Clinton. The journalists from the San Francisco media outlet co-founded by Al Gore, Clinton's vice president, were sentenced in June to a 12 years hard labour after being convicted of illegally entering the country. Press Council downsizes
The Australian Press Council will reduce its size, from 22 to 15 members in response to the current economic downturn. “The publishers who fund the Council sought budget cuts similar to those applied to their own budgets.” the Council explained in a statement. Linkz Odessy Indigenous Volunteer Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for volunteers to take part in the Linkz Odyssey Program. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to build their personal and professional skills while also gaining first-hand knowledge of Indigenous Australian culture!

While the program is open to people of all ages and skill levels it has been designed with University students in mind and would suit someone with an interest in Indigenous culture and affairs.

It requires a commitment of 3-4 hours a week, and a 6 week placement in the Northern Territory over December and January.

During this placement volunteers will have the opportunity to work as part of a team to deliver sport and recreation activities in a remote Indigenous community.

The Walkley Foundation administers the Walkley Awards, Australia’s most prestigious accolades for journalism www.walkleys.com. The Foundation also organises professional development programs for journalists and other media professionals.

We are calling for Event Management, Publicity and Journalism students to work as interns on publicity and event management for a variety of projects such as the Walkley Awards, Press Freedom Media Dinner and a number of conferences that we organise for journalists around the country.

Event students will assist with the co-ordination of a variety of events, from the Walkley Gala Awards Dinner for 1,000 journalists, fundraising for our Media Press Freedom Dinner, and a range of conferences and events for journalists and communications specialists.

Journalism students will assist with Walkley entries, award and judging processes, event publicity, and assist with the production process of The Walkley Magazine: Inside the Australian Media.

We’re after motivated, intelligent, creative and articulate journalism, communications or event management students, preferably in their final year of study. If you are confident with an energetic attitude and can bring a variety of skills to your internship, we want you!

UNICEF Australia have an opportunity for students to volunteer at a one-off fundraising event on Friday July 17. The event is the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 QLD Launch and will be held at The Sofitel Brisbane. The inaugural fundraising luncheon promises to be a premier event on Queensland’s corporate calendar and a key event in the lead up to Queensland’s Hyundai A-League season.

As the official launch of QLD’s Hyundai A-League season, the event will showcase Brisbane Roar and the two new Queensland teams - Gold Coast United and North Queensland Fury. Along with a raffle featuring several exclusive prizes, the event will be an entertaining and fun way to support UNICEF’s work for the world’s most vulnerable children.

Proceeds raised from the event will fund sport-based projects in West Africa, where sport and 'play' are utilized for the all-round development, well-being and happiness of children.

Minimum commitment for volunteers is 3 hours per week for assisting MDA and its clients for a period of 6 months after completion of the Volunteer Induction Program (consisting of 4 workshops over 4 weeks, approx. 2 hrs each).

We look to match on geographic location if possible but volunteers must be willing to travel up to 1 hour by public transport due to settlement locations.

Infostrada Sports is inviting applications of interest from your Communications, Journalism and Media students to become involved with our World Masters Games Event News Service team, through participating in our Biography Research Project internship.

A number of outstanding interns from the Biography Research Project will make the Event News Service Team, with the shortlist to be announced in the lead up to the 2009 World Masters Games.

The Event News Service is a Games-time operation aimed at assisting accredited media in covering the Games by providing a balanced, unbiased information service that includes news reports, press conference highlights and flash quotes.

Event News Service reporters will get to sharpen their basic reporting skills, learn to write breaking news, practice finding story angles under deadline pressure and get hands-on experience at interviewing athletes.

We are looking for interns who will receive training, and then during Gamestime will receive daily briefings and full support as they gather news items.

North Korean sentence

The International Federation of Journalists has called for the immediate release of two American journalists who were sentenced to 12 years hard labour by a North Korean court this week, for allegedly crossing the Chinese-North Korean border. Euna Lee and Laura Ling’s four day trial was held in secret and there is no avenue for appeal.

We had someone organised to do this filming next Tuesday, but they are now unable to do it.

These are the details.

We are seeking a student filmmaker for the following:

Hourly rate: $25 per hour

Equipment: preferably supply camera and have access to an editing suite

Products:

1. 3-4 min Journalistic, news style, factual video report to post on IML website www.iml.uq.edu.au
2. 90sec-2min promo on UTube - fresh, innovative, punchy aimed at 20-30 yr olds
3. Finished product with sound in Quicktime & mini DV

Thu 28 May or Mon 1 June – 1-2 hrs meet with IML rep Laurent Auclair (who works as script editor for French TV network & whose partner is a film producer in Australia & France) & will act as mentor for the project

Tue 2 June - 4 hrs preparing, filming & interviewing participants at IML’s 75th anniversary celebration, UQ Art Museum lawn, University Drive, St Lucia campus 4-8pm

Editing (assignment due dates & exam dates will certainly be taken into consideration)

8 hrs for video report

4 hrs for UTube video
